Mililani SPAM Can Artist Honored

Honolulu — The Hawaii State Senate today honored Mililani resident Scott Kaneshiro, who became an instant celebrity when his artwork was selected for the Special Hawaii Edition SPAM can label.

Just as SPAM is ubiquitous and iconic in our islands, so is Scott’s design called “Shaka SPAM Musubi No Ka ‘Oi”. It encompasses iconic island images – the flag of the State of Hawaii on the reverse, and, on the front, an outstretched hand in full shaka position, clutching a perfectly molded SPAM musubi. The special edition SPAM can officially went on sale at island stores in August and has become an instant best-seller and collector’s item.

The Hawaii SPAM can label contest attracted more than one hundred design entries. Hormel Foods, which produces SPAM, was looking for an artist from Hawaii to create a customized package exclusively made for Hawaii. The winner was chosen by a combination of public on-line voting and final Hormel brand management approval.
