  • Hawai'i Dept. of Health reminds everyone that face masks are no substitute of physical distancing

Across the state, customers and staff at pharmacies, supermarkets, and take-out food establishments are wearing cloth masks and using physical distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Many local and national chain stores have established controls on how many customers can enter a store at one time. The Joint Information Center has produced a printable store-front poster to further encourage physical distancing, aimed at flattening the curve of new COVID-19 cases. Download the poster here:https://www.dropbox.com/sh/f3crddhm1dvx1e0/AADYxpbepZ5d_dpKPWFopOJHa?dl=0 “I’m pleased to see how quickly people are responding to the guidance to use face covering in addition to physical distancing and only going out for essential reasons,” said Health Director Bruce Anderson. “We urge all essential businesses to immediately implement physical distancing measures, throughout their operations, not just at the check-out counters. Wearing a cloth or fabric mask complements other critical measures and can prevent spreading the disease to others.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Health (DOH) have recommended wearing a cloth face covering in public places, like stores and at takeout food establishments, masks are not a substitute from physical distancing. “Physical distancing is still the most effective way of preventing the spread of this disease in Hawai‘i,” said Anderson. “If you aren’t used to wearing a mask, it’s difficult to remember not to touch your face when putting it on or adjusting it. It is so important to avoid touching your face with unwashed hands to prevent catching the virus.” The CDC guidance emphasizes that maintaining 6-foot physical distancing remains important for slowing the spread of the virus. Masks are primarily considered an infection source control measure designed to keep sick people from spreading their germs to others. Masks complement physical distancing. They are not a substitute for stay-at-home orders and probably less effective than frequent handwashing and simply staying a safe distance away from other people, who may be infected and not know it. “It’s alright,” Anderson added, “to politely remind others to practice good physical distancing, even when they’re wearing a mask.” # # # PDF: Hawai‘i Department of Health reminds everyone that face masks are no substitute for physical distancing #COVID19 #Coronavirus #DOH #FaceMasks #SocialDistancing

  • Moloka‘i second case of COVID-19 confirmed

(Kaunakakai, Molokaʻi) – Maui Mayor Mike Victorino, Senate Majority Leader J. Kalani English (Hāna, East and Upcountry Maui, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i and Kaho‘olawe) and Representative Lynn DeCoite (D-East Maui, Moloka‘i, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe and Molokini) announced tonight that a second case of COVID-19 was confirmed today on Moloka‘i. After the first case was confirmed earlier this week from an employee of the Friendly Market Center, Victorino, English, and DeCoite worked with the market’s owners to facilitate testing for all employees. The second positive test came out of that round of testing. As a result, Friendly Market Center will remain closed until April 20 and employees are going into self-isolation. Mayor Victorino said: “I have been notified that test results for a second individual have returned positive on Molokai. The individual is an employee of Friendly Market Center and is in self-isolation. I have been told that all employees at Friendly Market Center have immediately self-quarantined and that the store will be closed until April 20. Unfortunately, this situation was a strong possibility after the first individual, who also is a store employee, tested positive on Molokai. House Rep. Lynn DeCoite, Sen. J. Kalani English and I have all been working with the local businesses to help sanitize their buildings and surrounding areas. I want the residents of Molokai to know that we will make sure that services and goods will continue to arrive to the island. My primary focus is to maintain essential supplies for Molokai and ensure their health and safety. Senator English said: “By facilitating immediate testing on island and getting the results processed on O‘ahu the next day, we were able to identify a second positive case at the store and take steps to reduce further spread. The Friendly Market will close for 14 days. We are working to ensure the other stores in Kaunakakai have sufficient food and resources for island residents.” Representative DeCoite said: “Tonight we were made aware of the second confirmed case on Molokaʻi. The person is another employee of Friendly Market. Now, more than ever it is important that we all comply with the County and State Stay at Home Orders. We know this is in the Moloka‘i Community. The way we kokua one another is to STAY AT HOME! It is ALL of our responsibility to STOP THE SPREAD by staying home! I know we are all scared and want information. For now, STAY AT HOME. Only send one person to get groceries and supplies for your household. Moloka‘i, we are strong, we are resilient and right now is our chance to show the rest of the state how we can come together by complying with all of the county and state recommendations to protect everyone in our community!” #COVID19 #Coronavirus #Molokai #FriendlyMarket

  • Mayor clarifies that on-line automobile leasing and sales is an “Essential Business”

Mayor Kirk Caldwell signed Emergency Order No. 2020-04 allowing car dealerships to sell or lease vehicles on a strictly on-line basis. To view the Order, click here. According to the Order, which is consistent with the Mayor’s Stay at Home Order, dealerships will be able to continue sales as long as each step of the transaction is conducted on-line, and the car is then delivered to the customer’s home.  The Order clarifies that this is Essential Business, as long as the leasing or sales activities are conducted by licensed new and used car and truck dealerships and only if the activity is for one of the following purposes: To close a pending transaction that began before the Mayor’s Emergency Order 2020-02 was issued (March 22); or To replace a totaled vehicle, replace a damaged vehicle that is impractical to repair, extend a lease that expires, or provide transportation to essential workers in “Essential Business” or “Essential Infrastructure” if the essential worker has no other means of transportation. Under no circumstances shall there be in-person test driving of any vehicle, and the buyer must certify that the purchase is essential for one of the reasons provided above. All activities must continue to be conducted in a manner that complies with Social Distancing Requirements established in Emergency Order 2020-02. This is effective at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30. Violation of the Order is punishable as a misdemeanor, with fines up to $5,000, up to a year in jail, or both.

  • Senate President COVID-19 impacted Hawai'i businesses to take advantage of new resources

Senate President urges Hawai‘i small businesses impacted by COVID-19 to take advantage of new federal government resources Honolulu, Hawai‘i – Senate President Ron Kouchi (D-Kauai) is urging Hawai‘i small businesses impacted by COVID-19 to take advantage of federal government loans, grants, tax credits and other programs now available through the United States Small Businesses Administration. The resources were made available by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, passed by Congress last month. “The unprecedented measures we must take to slow the spread of COVID-19 are having a major impact on small businesses, especially in Hawai‘i where so many jobs are dependent on tourism,” said Senate President Kouchi. “I encourage all small business owners to look into these newly available federal programs and apply for any assistance they and their employees need.” Programs include: Paycheck Protection, Economic Injury Disaster Loans and Emergency Grants, Debt Relief for New and Existing SBA Borrowers, Relief for Small Business Government Contractors, Employee Retention Tax Credit, Payroll Tax Delay, Advance Payment of Tax Credits for Paid Leave, Business Tax Relief, and Delay for Single Employer Pension Plans. • “Farm to Car” program expanding due to overwhelming response

The City and County of Honolulu and the Hawai‘i Farm Bureau launched the “Farm to Car” program on Thursday, March 26, in an effort to provide O‘ahu residents with fresh fruits and vegetables during Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s Stay at Home/Work from Home Order. Through this “Farm to Car” program, customers can pre-order local farm products on-line at hfbf.org/farm-to-car then pick-up their order with minimal personal contact. In the first five hours after “Farm to Car’s” launch, more than 3,000 people signed up for the program and over 200 orders were placed. This overwhelming response prompted the Hawai‘i Farm Bureau to extend the program at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center through the month of April. In addition to Wednesdays, pick-up will also be available on Saturdays, beginning April 11. “Grab and go” pick-up will continue to be held at the Blaisdell Center “Galleria”, and the pick-up time has been set to run from 9 a.m. to noon on both days. Customers are reminded to bring their receipt upon pick-up and that orders are not distributed on a first come, first serve basis. All orders are guaranteed. Due to the increase in demand, the on-line store does sellout quickly, but the Hawai‘i Farm Bureau wants to remind those interested that by signing up for updates on the hfbf.com/farm-to-car page, as well as registering on the Farm to Car marketplace, you can receive store updates in an on-line newsletter. For more information on the program, call 848-2074. Under the Mayor’s Emergency Order (No. 2020-02), farmers’ markets are declared Essential Business and delivering fruits and vegetables are deemed Essential Activity.

  • Lanikai parking restrictions in place due to COVID-19

***TRAFFIC ADVISORY*** Lanikai parking restrictions in place due to COVID-19 LANIKAI, KAILUA – The City and County of Honolulu's Department of Transportation Services (DTS) will restrict parking in Lanikai starting Monday April 6 at 12:01 a.m. to April 30 in an effort to restrict growing numbers of non-essential gatherings along the Lanikai-Kaʻōhao shoreline. No parking will be allowed on all streets and shoulders in Lanikai, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Despite the closure of beach parks island-wide, beach goers continue to congregate and gather on Oʻahu's beaches.  Police enforcement to disperse these gatherings is straining HPD's resources.  “This is a critical time in our island's fight against COVID-19.  This is not a time to gather for non-essential recreation on our beaches, which disregards the health of the community at large” said City Council Chair Ikaika Anderson. “HPD supports all measures that will deter the public from gathering on the beaches during this critical time,” said Police Chief Susan Ballard.  “As of yesterday, officers issued 3,127 warnings and 281 citations, mostly for being in the parks and beaches.  We need every single person to be responsible and to put public health first.” DTS will place temporary “sawhorse” type signs on streets in Lanikai to warn drivers of the parking restriction.   These parking controls should be in place by Saturday, April 4.  “The Lanikai Association greatly appreciates and supports the action of the City in imposing these parking restrictions to help our police and first responders assure the health and safety of our residents during this crisis,” said Lanikai Association President Tom Cestare. The City and County of Honolulu is asking everyone to remain at home and only leave for essential travel. This includes going to work for essential employees, picking up groceries, or visiting your doctor. Please respect the stay at home order so we may flatten the curve, put an end to COVID-19, and keep our ʻohana safe.
